Bebe Neuwirth Adds Big Apple Condo

Eagle-eyed celebrity real estate snitch Polly Wannacracker first discovered, and property records confirm, that veteran stage and screen star Bebe Neuwirth shelled out $1.8 million for a one-bed/one-bath condo in a discreetly swank full-service building in the heart of New York’s Greenwich Village. The two-time Emmy and Tony winner — who currently co-stars on the dramatic series “Madam Secretary” — already owns a larger, almost 1,500-square-foot unit on a higher floor that she acquired in 2002, so it’s not clear what plans she might have for the new apartment. What we do know, for what it’s worth, is that the seller is a former Russian beauty queen and social gadabout who got herself into some hot water a couple of years ago for forging illicit painkiller prescriptions. Anyhoo, the wood-floored apartment comes in at just 845-square-feet, according to online listings, and includes a proper entrance hall, a good-sized living room with wood-burning fireplace, a narrow but windowed galley kitchen with adjacent dining nook, and a corner bedroom with walk-in closet.

The much-coveted building, designed by lauded architect Emery Roth, and constructed in the early 1930s by prewar big shots Bing & Bing, is packed to the penthouse with high-profile peeps: Baltimore-based filmmaker John Waters has owned a small unit since the early 1990s; fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi controls three contiguous high-floor units plus a fourth on a lower floor; Cameron Diaz maintains a 2,400-square-foot pied-a-terre she had worked over by West Coast-based maximalist decorator Kelly Wearstler and photographed for Elle Decor; and mega-agent Bryan Lourd — whose long lineup of A-list clients include Madonna and Oprah — owns a pair of conjoined penthouses purchased in two separate transactions that totaled more than $9 million.

  1. Sandpiper says:

Deceptively spacious for such a snug footprint.

  2. FonHom says:

If she has another unit in the building I assume Ms. Neuwirth won’t be living in the space. But whether it’s for a relative, visitors or business, $1.8 million is too much for an apartment where guests will have to troop through the bedroom to reach the sole bathroom. IMO.
