Facebook wants to bring more music to your news feed: The social network launched a new post format called Music Stories Thursday within its iPhone app that will allow users of Apple Music or Spotify to share songs and albums with their friends and followers.
Songs play back right within the news feed, with one big caveat: Music Stories isn’t based on full stories, but only previews. Anyone who wants to hear the full song still has to click through to the music service in question, and either buy the song on iTunes, or add it to their subscription library.
On the flip side, making only previews available allows Spotify to deliver songs to anyone, not just paying subscribers of a particular service. That’s remarkably different from an earlier collaboration with Spotify, which not only forced users to sign up for Spotify, but even made them download the service’s app to listen to songs.
Facebook has said that it wants to add additional music services over time, and the feature will eventually make its way to other platforms as well.
