Apple may eventually launch additional radio stations like Beats1 alongside its Apple Music service: The company secured rights to launch up to five additional radio stations as part of its deals with record labels, according to a report from the Verge.
Apple could for example decide to launch genre-specific stations, or stations around certain events like a holiday station, according to the report.
The company hasn’t released any usage numbers for the service yet, but Apple CEO Tim Cook said during its most recent earnings call that “millions of listeners” have tuned into Beats1 in the first few weeks.
Apple isn’t alone in its attempt to combine on-demand music subscriptions with live radio. Competitor Rdio is about to unveil an expanded partnership with Cumulus Media that will make all 470 Cumulus radio stations available through the service.
