‘Walking Dead’ Free Mobile Game Tops 1 Million Downloads Over Opening Weekend

AMC continues to milk — or perhaps bleed — “The Walking Dead” franchise, touting more than 1 million downloads of the official mobile game for TV’s top-rated zombie thriller in the first three days of its release.

The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land” game, developed with Finland’s Next Games, was released Oct. 8 for Apple iOS apps and shot to the No. 1 spot on Apple’s top free apps chart for both iPhone and iPad in the U.S. and 11 other countries. The launch of the free app was timed for the Oct. 11 season six premiere on AMC.

In the game, guided by zombie-slayer Daryl Dixon (played by Norman Reedus), players lead their own unique groups of survivors who must fight walkers and survive to create and build their own safe haven. “The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land” features six character classes and numerous characters, each with different abilities and strengths. The game includes 10 episodes of story missions at launch, with weekly “guild challenges” adding a social dimension to the game.

According to AMC and Next Games, “The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land” drew more than 2,200 user reviews with an average rating of 4.63 out of 5 stars in the first three days. Users played 31 million minutes worldwide and watched 1.5 million videos in that time period.

The companies say an Android version of the game is slated to launch in the coming weeks.

The free-to-play game, which requires iOS 8.0 or later, offers in-app purchases for users to buy gold, weapons and other gear. The app is rated for users 17 and older, with Apple citing “frequent/intense” violence and horror and fear themes.
