Twitter Video-Ad Architect Glenn Brown Exits

Glenn Brown, who led the launch of Twitter’s Amplify video-advertising program, is leaving the company.

Brown will take on a role as entrepreneur-in-residence at Betaworks, a New York-based incubator that invests in early-stage network-focused, consumer media businesses. Mike Park, director of Twitter Amplify, will now be leading the team.

Brown announced his new gig in a tweet Friday. “Few professional experiences can match the thrill of building Twitter Amplify from a mad-scientist experiment… into a global video partnerships team with hundreds of partners including major sports leagues and TV networks,” he wrote in a message posted on Medium. “I will long remain a huge fan of Twitter and Twitter’s video work and look forward to seeing it continue to break huge new ground for a long time.”

A Twitter rep confirmed Brown’s departure. His last day at Twitter is Friday.

His exit comes as Twitter launched a major expansion to Amplify at an event Thursday. Under the new program, any publisher or content creator can opt-in to have ads placed as 6-second prerolls in their video tweets, and receive a 70% share of the revenue. Brown, who is based in New York, had been planning his next move for some time, according to insiders.

Officially launched in May 2013, Twitter Amplify has grown to more than 200 partners, including the NFL, the NBA, TV networks like NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox, and other media firms.

Brown joined Twitter in 2011 as director of promoted content and sponsorships. He previously worked at YouTube in business development and on music partnerships, and before that was on Google’s legal team.

In explaining why he was leaving to join Betaworks, Brown wrote that “I’ve been a longtime follower of (Betaworks CEO) John Borthwick and his portfolio companies and investments — from Chartbeat to Giphy to Digg to Airbnb to SocialFlow to Twitter itself, among many others.”
