Under the terms of the pact, PPTV’s 400 million users will be able to watch current hit shows from the Eye and the premium Showtime service. The streaming service also has exclusive rights to the China premieres of select upcoming Showtime series and CBS’s new event series.
“China has the largest number of online video viewers in the world, so we are thrilled to partner with PPTV to bring CBS and Showtime content to this exciting market,” said Armando Nuñez, president and CEO of CBS Global Distribution Group.
The companies didn’t specify which titles will be coming to PPTV. Current primetime shows on CBS include “The Good Wife” (pictured above), “Supergirl,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “Code Black.” Showtime original series include “Homeland” and “The Affair.”
“As the leading supplier of U.S. programming, CBS Studios International has an abundance of premium content and extensive experience in the international television marketplace, helping PPTV to reach new heights in the online video streaming market in China,” PPTV chairman Fan Zhijun said.
Shanghai-based PPTV’s largest stakeholder is Chinese electronics retailer Suning Commerce Group, which acquired a $420 million stake in the company in 2013.
