NBC’s ‘American Ninja Warrior,’ Fox’s ‘MasterChef’ Top Monday

NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior” and Fox’s “MasterChef” were in a tight battle as Monday’s top-rated program among young adults while ABC’s “The Bachelorette” was again tops in total viewers, but is down in demos from last summer.

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, NBC followed a repeat of “Last Comic Standing” (1.0 rating/4 share in adults 18-49, 3.5 million viewers overall) with “American Ninja Warrior” (1.8/6 in 18-49, 5.5 million viewers overall), which appears to be up two-tenths week to week for its best demo score since June 2. It also drew what, at least in the prelims, looks to be a season high in total viewers.

(Note that due to a preemption in Detroit for a fireworks special, “Ninja Warrior” could be adjusted down a bit in the nationals; the special did a 5.3 demo rating in the 10:30 p.m. half-hour in Detroit, which represents 1.6% of the country.)

At Fox, “MasterChef” (1.7/6 in 18-49, 4.9 million viewers overall) was slightly below last week, again winning its hour in 18-49 and 25-54 (2.2/7). It was followed by “24: Live Another Day” (1.4/4 in 18-49, 5.7 million viewers overall), which was on par with last week (though it could edge up in the nationals). Fox ran second to NBC for the night in 18-49 while winning in total viewers.

ABC’s “The Bachelorette” (1.5/5 in 18-49, 5.9 million viewers overall) was down 12% (0.2) week to week, placing a close second in the demo to Fox while winning its time period (and the night) in total viewers; a year ago, the dating show was averaging a 1.8 demo rating at this point last summer. At 10 p.m., “Mistresses” (1.0/3 in 18-49, 3.7 million viewers overall) held steady.

CBS didn’t generate a lot of interest with its “Under the Dome” recap special “Inside Chester’s Mill” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 4.3 million viewers overall), which performed in line with last week’s original “48 Hours”; “Under the Dome” returns next week. Earlier, the net aired encores of “2 Broke Girls” (1.0/4 in 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall), “Mom” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 4.7 million viewers overall), “Mike & Molly” (1.1/3 in 18-49, 5.5 million viewers overall) and “Two and a Half Men” (1.0/3 in 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall).

At CW, the 8 p.m. “Whose Line Is It Anyway” original (0.6/2 in 18-49, 1.6 million viewers overall) was up a tenth from last week, and the repeat that followed held that audience (0.6/2, 1.6 million). The net then took a tumble as usual with its original of “Beauty and the Beast” (0.3/1 in 18-49, 0.8 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: NBC, 1.6/5; Fox, 1.5/5; ABC, 1.3/4; Univision, 1.1/4; CBS, 0.9/3; Telemundo, 0.6/2; CW, 0.4/1.

In total viewers: Fox, 5.3 million; ABC, 5.1 million; NBC, 4.8 million; CBS, 4.7 million; Univision, 2.9 million; Telemundo, 1.5 million; CW, 1.2 million.
