‘Veronica Mars’: Cast, Date Announced for Web Spinoff

This story is epic: many of the stars from the TV series and subsequent film “Veronica Mars” will be reprising their roles in the CW Seed web series “Play It Again, Dick,” which focuses on actor Ryan Hansen and his Dick Casablancas character.

Each of the cast members will play their former “Veronica Mars” character, as well as a heightened version of their real-life selves. Kristen Bell will return as a version of her private detective lead and Jason Dohring will play bad boy Logan Echolls. Enrico Colantoni will be back as Keith Mars and Percy Daggs III can be seen as Wallace, one of Veronica’s best friends and her partner. Daran Norris, Francis Capra, Chris Lowell and Ken Marino will also return.

In a feat of network synergy, Robert Buckley and Rose McIver of “Veronica Mars” creator Rob Thomas’ midseason CW zomcom “iZombie,” will also appear.

“Play It Again, Dick” was announced in January and was created by Thomas with CW Digital is overseeing the project. “Veronica Mars” aired from 2004 to 2007 on UPN and then on the CW. A film version of the show was released in theaters this past March after a successful Kickstarter campaign.

Earlier this year, Thomas said Ryan Hansen would be a central part of the project.

“The web series will have more in common with ‘Party Down’ tonally,” Thomas told Hitflix, referencing  the Starz comedy he worked on with Hansen after the “Mars” series wrapped, “but it will be about Ryan Hansen, or at least a version of Ryan Hansen, deciding to capitalize on the current ‘Veronica Mars’ heat to get his own series on the air.”

“Play It Again, Dick” will premiere Sept. 15 on the CW Seed. The series will have eight episodes.

i look forward to seeing the show , I know many who loved the VM tv series & the latest movie.. I loved both :-)

  2. Rena Moretti says:

The PR is epic… The desperation of keeping up the pretense this is a show anyone cared about is breath taking…

This was a flop TV show, followed by a Kickstarter PR stunt where the filmmakers already had the money in place and bought themselves TV time with their BS story. The movie flopped, but we can’t let it die because think of all the careers depending on the illusion continuing, especially that of uber-hack (and untruth teller extraordinaire) Rob Thomas.

  3. Rex Rivers says:

Wow, talk about beating a dead horse.

    • Wow! Did any of you watch this series? This was an excellent show with great writing and acting by a wonderful cast. If you did watch it and didn’t like it, then all I can say is you must have bad taste. You probably sit around watching stupid reality shows! Get some intelligence and some taste!!

      • Rena Moretti says:

Yes I did, and I regretted every second I wasted on this sorry excuse for a TV show!

The writing was so ridiculously full pf plot holes and the direction failing to match the tone of the script (which was that of a low-brow comedy) that I can only infer they actually think the writing was serious…

In any case a truly awful show and audiences stayed away in droves.

What is very wrong about Hollywood today is that it actually believes Rob Thomas’ PR hype rather than bother to look at how awful his shows are and how unsuccessful.

  4. lulu says:

Awesome. And with some of the cast of iZombie, i want David Anders to join the project..do it Rob !

    • Rena Moretti says:

Yeah Rob! One more crappy show! You can do it!!

If this guy was half as good at making TV shows as he is in hyping them, he’d be producing masterpieces… :(
