Thandie Newton and Melissa George have been cast in “The Slap,” NBC’s upcoming eight-part miniseries, joining the previously announced Peter Sarsgaard, Mary-Louise Parker, Zachary Quinto and Brian Cox.
Based on an Australian series of the same name — which itself is based on a novel from Australian author Christos Tsiolkas — “The Slap” depicts the spiraling aftermath of a man slapping another couple’s child. Newton will play Aisha, a “stressed but philosophical” doctor as well as Hector’s (Sarsgaard) wife and mother to their two children. George will play Rosie, the overbearing mother of Hugo, the slapped child. George won a Logie Award, Australia’s Emmy equivalent, for her performance in the same role in the Australian original in 2012.
All eight episodes are written by “Brothers & Sisters” creator/EP Jon Robin Baitz and produced by Universal Television. Joining Baitz as executive producers are Walter Parkes, Laurie MacDonald, Ted Gold and Tony Ayres. An airdate for the series has yet to be announced.
