Having scored with “La Voz Kids,” Telemundo Media is teaming with Spain’s Reset TV, founded by the creators of “Star Academy,” to jointly own, develop, produce and distribute “El Artista,” a new musical talent competition format plus weekend primetime series.
Based on a concept by Reset TV, whose owners Toni Cruz and Josep Maria Mainat created “Star Academy” plus “Look Who’s Dancing” while at Gestmusic-Endemol, the series will bow in the 2014-15 season.
Helmed by Cruz and Mainat, the series follows upcoming stars as they show on stage in a spectacular gala the chops to become the series’ ultimate winner. Like Telemundo’s upcoming reality show “Top Chef Estrellas,” the also 13-seg “El Artista” will be shot in a two-hour format and air at weekends.
“Audiences around the world have a proven appetite for innovative music competition programs that the entire family can enjoy as appointment viewing,” said Marcos Santana, president of Telemundo International.
“That growing interest combined with the creativity and experience of the team at Reset TV will allow us to develop and produce a successful format for the U.S. and international markets.”
In other announcements at a Telemundo press conference in NATPE, Telemundo will launch a second feed for its pay TV channel in Latin America, with its footprint focused on Venezuela, Colombia and Central America – as opposed to the original’s Mexico – allowing regional advertisers to more effectively reach their targets,” Santana said.
Mexican actress Sara Maldonado, the star of Telemundo soap “Aurora,” and an undercover cop in “The Queen of the South,” introduced Telemundo original series “Camelia La Texana,” helmed by Mexico’s Carlos Bolado, whose “Colosio: The Assassination” – a political conspiracy thriller based on true events from “Instructions Not Included” producer Monica Lozano – was Mexico’s highest-grossing movie of 2012.
Shot not only in Mexico but also Los Angeles and San Antonio – as Telemundo sets more Spanish-language soaps north of the border, targeting its core U.S. audience– “Camelia” is inspired by band Los Tigres del Norte “corrido” – ballad – “Contrabando y traicion.” Maldonado stars as a woman driven to a live of crime by betrayal, then an obsession with revenge.
“Camelia” will debut in Telemundo’s 10 p.m. timeslot, coveted prime time real estate occupied by both “The Queen of the South” and “El senor de los cielos.” Tita Lombardo, a line-producer on “Babel” and “On the Road,” produces. Telemundo International sells foreign rights.
