'SNL' Adds Sasheer Zamata, First Black

Sasheer Zamata will be the latest young comedian to join “Saturday Night Live,” Variety has confirmed.

As first reported by Deadline, Zamata will make her debut as a featured player on “SNL” on Jan. 18, the latenight program’s first live show in the new year. Zamata is a University of Virginia alum and trained at the Upright Citizens Brigade.

The thesp will be “SNL’s” first black female cast member since Maya Rudolph departed in 2007. “SNL” and Lorne Michaels came under fire in late 2013 over the cast’s lack of diversity, and the series poked fun at its own controversy during its opening seg when Kerry Washington hosted “SNL” in November.

News broke at the end of the year that “SNL” was holding auditions specifically to find black female cast members to join the program in 2014.

It kills me how we continur to divide each other we are all brothers and sisters What ever happen to matin luther king. Will we eve r stand next to one another hand in hand.will we continue to teach our children the same thing generation after generation luz Gonzalez Green

  2. Jeannie says:

How ridiculous to announce the color of ones skin as a way to identify a new cast member. Shame on snl for keeping things so backwards in this country, instead of hiring fresh talent , they are labeling people. Stop the stupidity snl or you may find yourself without a viewing audience .

  3. Dee says:

Hope they don’t top the search at ONE…. #TokenMuch?

  4. Smooth says:

    Congrats Sasheer, go and get’em.

  5. Nonya Business says:

Whites have shown time and again over hundreds of years that they can’t just view people as people. Its time we accept them for the neanderthals they are and force them to at least act like hue-mans…even if they never fully will be.

    • truthiness says:

Well, you can thank us “neanderthals” for the computer you are using to type that comment. You can also thank us and are Asian counterparts for all things modern. Buuuuut, I guess you guys did give us peanut butter.

  6. Tammy Brown says:

Great opportunity but I wouldn’t want to be in Ms. Zamata’s shoes right now…she’s in a tough situation. If she’s successful, it’s because the SNL folks are geniuses for finding her; if she’s not, it’s because she was only hired for diversity’s sake. I wish her well though…

  7. LJ Matt says:

“Can’t we all just get along?”

  8. so now instead of being hired for her talents she will be known as the token black girl added for diversity’s sake.

Woooooooooooo!!!! New black female cast member. I checked out some of Youtube videos of her and she’s pretty funny. Hopefully SNL can write some good material for her.

    • She’ll be better off writing her own material or else we may only be seeing her as Michelle Obama or in black-themed sketches. SNL doesn’t seem to know how to write for black people without making race the main focus of the sketch. It’s like black people can’t just be average, regular people.

One new member will not save SNL …but where are the Latinas/Latinos? the Native Americans? Asian ? etc etc etc Someone from Texas even.

Here’s what I don’t get about this move: Where are the Indian men? Where are the Japanese women? Where are the Brazilian transgenders? Anyone else have issue with this kind of Affirmative Action? I’m a believer in the policy of ‘the best job candidate wins’. If this is what’s going to happen, then I implore all minorities not currently featured on SNL to boycott – that way, you’ll be ensured your “race, color, religion, sex, or national origin” is fairly represented. Secondly, I think it’s ridiculous to lump all white people together. I’m sure if you break down where the new cast members are from, they’re not all from Germany. But, even that’s ridiculous. The more you cater to this type of thinking, the more segregated you get. Look at people as people. The fact this has received so much attention and such a response is backwards. I don’t see this as progressive. It’s a knee jerk reaction, a stop gap solution.
