Sky Italia Inks Exclusive Pact With HBO In Italy

Matthew McConaughey Emmys

ROME – Rupert Murdoch’s Sky Italia paybox has inked an exclusive output deal with HBO under which shows including “True Detective,” “Game of Thrones” and “Boardwalk Empire” will air on the satcaster’s new Sky Atlantic channel dedicated to global premium series.

The deal strengthens HBO’s presence on the Italian market and also adds significantly to Sky’s content cachet.

While “True Detective”(pictured) has not aired yet in Italy, the Matthew McConaughey-starrer has already generated big Italo buzz and rampant speculation as to which outlet it would surface on. The deal also includes Cinemax series “Banshee.”

HBO has a longstanding rapport with Sky Italia which is Italy’s top pay-TV service with roughly 4.8 million subs. However previously HBO also had a relationship with Italo pubcaster RAI.

The exclusive deal with SKY covers all HBO content comprising TV series, docudramas and TV movies and covers all Sky platforms including catchup service Sky Go and Sky On Demand.

Sky’s new Sky Atlantic channel, which launches April 9 with Netflix original “House of Cards,” will also be beaming Sky’s hot new Italo crime series “Gomorrah,” widely sold internationally by Beta Film.

“We believe that airing HBO product next to some key European and Italian productions will give even more relevance to the great creativity that Italy is able to express and that Sky Italia is supporting either directly or through acquisitions,” said Sky Italia Exec VP Programming in a statement.
