Police, troops in Sochi put on 'combat alert'
LONDON — Russia is constructing a ring of steel around the Black Sea resort of Sochi, host city for the Winter Olympic Games.
More than 30,000 police and troops have been moved into the area, and access is being tightly controlled.
Move follows the bombings in the southern Russian city of Volgograd on Dec. 29 and 30.
“Starting January 7, all divisions responsible for ensuring the guests’ security at the Games are being put on combat alert,” emergency situations minister Vladimir Puchkov said, the BBC reported.
“Every facility will be put under protection and a space-based monitoring system will be launched.”
