LONDON — RTL Group, Europe’s largest broadcasting network, has confirmed that its German division, Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland, is to launch a special interest pay TV channel, GEO, on May 8.
The documentary channel, which was first announced in September, is being launched in co-operation with publishing group Gruner + Jahr. The channel will be based on GEO magazine, which Gruner + Jahr publishes in 20 countries worldwide. Both RTL Group and Gruner + Jahr are controlled by German conglom Bertelsmann.
GEO magazine, which prides itself on its top notch journalism and photography, covers a broad range of subjects, including history, sociology, geography, ethnology and travel. Its readership is upscale, with above-average income and education.
Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland’s other special interest channels include RTL Crime, RTL Living and RTL Passion.
