Participant Media’s Pivot to Broadcast Peabody Awards Through 2016

The U. of Georgia’s George Foster Peabody Awards and Pivot, Participant Media’s TV network targeting millennials, have inked a multi-year deal spanning through 2016.

In an announcement made Monday, Peabody Awards director Jeffrey P. Jones and Pivot prexy Evan Shapiro said Pivot will be the exclusive broadcast home for the annual event through the Peabodys’ 75th anniversary. The network will also produce and televise original primetime specials spotlighting the annual winners.

The agreement between the young TV network and oldest award in electronic media marks the first time in over a decade that the Peabody awards ceremony has had a broadcast home.

“Pivot was a natural choice for us,” Jones said in a statement. “For 73 years, we have honored ‘storytelling that matters,’ and Pivot’s emphasis on entertainment that inspires action and change makes them the perfect home. Together we hope to bring greater attention not only to those in electronic media who are producing quality work, but also to the importance of the stories they are telling.”

Shapiro said, “The Peabody Awards is one of the most important and prestigious honors in media. It’s our mission at Participant Media and now with Pivot to elevate the impact of stories that matter. We are honored to bring this show to television so that a larger audience can celebrate the extraordinary work of these enlightened storytellers.”

Pivot launched Aug. 1 and combines its subscription service with the integration of  live and on-demand streaming option via the Pivot app.

The Peabody Awards recognize the achievement of broadcasters, cable and webcasters, producing orgs and individuals and are administered by UGA’s Grady College of journalism and mass communication.

This year’s honorees will be announced April 2 and the Peabody medallions will be presented May 19 at a luncheon ceremony at New York City’s Waldorf-Astoria hotel.
