Nick Cannon Sets ‘Drumline’ Sequel at VH1

VH1 has greenlit TV movie “Drumline: A New Beat,” with Nick Cannon on board to co-star and exec produce. “A New Beat” is a sequel to 2002 feature film “Drumline,” and will begin lensing this spring with a fall 2014 debut in mind.

Regina Hicks and Karin Gist are penning “A New Beat,” with VH1 producing in partnership with Fox TV Studios.

“Even though [‘Drumline’] was released over a decade ago, I am constantly approached by people on the street who tell me how much of an impact it made on them,” Cannon said. “As a producer, my thought was, ‘How do we create an updated version that would translate to today’s audience and still feel fresh and original?” Cannon then mentioned that a “female lead character” has been added to this updated version of the “Drumline” concept, and that “VH1 is the perfect network to partner with on this modernized take.”

Susan Levison, exec veep of VH1’s original programming, noted that “Drumline” “always generates high ratings when we air it on VH1.”

Exec producers on “Drumline: A New Beat” include Cannon and Levison along with Wendy Finerman, Jody Gerson, Dallas Austin, Maggie Malina, Michael Goldman and Jill Holmes.
