First Look Peter Capaldi Doctor Who

LONDON — BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the U.K. pubcaster, is to send Peter Capaldi, the actor taking over the lead role in sci-fi series “Doctor Who,” on a world tour.

Capaldi will be joined by on-screen companion Jenna Coleman and the show’s lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat to visit seven cities across five continents in 12 days.

The tour, which will publicize the show’s forthcoming series eight, begins in the U.K. on Aug. 7 and ends in Brazil on Aug. 19. It marks the largest-ever promotional undertaking in “Doctor Who’s” 50-year history.

The tour will kick off in Cardiff, Wales before taking in London (U.K.), Seoul (South Korea), Sydney (Australia), New York (U.S.), Mexico City (Mexico) and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). More details of the itinerary will be available soon at http://www.doctorwho.tv/worldtour.

BBC Worldwide’s ambition for the brand has grown since the global success of the 50th anniversary, which saw the special episode “The Day of the Doctor” broadcast simultaneously in 98 countries and in over 1,500 movie theaters across the world.

Amanda Hill, chief brands officer at BBC Worldwide, said: “This tour is something normally reserved for Hollywood blockbusters, but with ‘Doctor Who’ it appears you can do anything you dream of, and continue to challenge what’s perceived as the norm in TV.”

Series eight is due to air in the U.K. in August. BBC America, the U.S. broadcaster, will transmit on the same day. “Doctor Who” is distributed by BBC Worldwide to more than 200 territories.

Capaldi said: “After eight months solid filming deep in the world of monsters, Jenna and I are thrilled to be heading for the Planet of Fans.”
