MipTV: ZDF Enterprises Nabs Hit Scandi-Noir

PARIS– ZDF Enterprises has acquired international sales rights to hit Swedish Noir series “Thicker Than Water” for international sales.

Set in the Stockholm’s archipelago, the dark family series,  which is produced by leading Swedish shingle Nice Drama (“The Hundred Year-Old-Man Who Climbed Out Of the Window And Disappeared”) for SVT and YLE,  tells the story of three conflicted siblings who much join forces to run their late mother’s idyllic Bed & Breakfast for one entire season.

Created by Henrik Jansson-Schweizer,”Thicker Than Water” is penned by Niklas Rockstrom and Morgan Jensen, and features a cast including Sweden’s and Finland’s brightest rising stars.

The series, directed by Erik Leijonborg, Anders Engstrom and Molly Hartleb, achieved an average share of 29% in SVT’s drama primetime slot, and “has been hailed by Swedish press as an original reboot of the so-called archipelago drama genre,” stated ZDF.

“We are really in unknown territory here, with a rather dark story set in the idyllic backdrop of the Aland’s archipelago in summertime”, says Patrick Nebout, Nice Drama’s exec producer. “Audiences have completely embraced the story and its fascinating characters from the very first episode, and validated the show’s edgy undertones.”

Fred Burcksen, ZDF Enterprises’ exec VP and COO pointed out “Thicker Than Water” was the first Swedish family drama program in the company’s catalogue. “In view of our  longstanding experience in the successful marketing of Scandinavian product, we are proud to be in charge of the worldwide distribution rights for this series including remake and format rights, with the exception of a few Scandinavian rights,” added the exec.
