MIPTV: Baltasar Kormakur Set for Icelandic Crime Series ‘Trapped’

CANNES — Iceland’s top filmmaker Baltasar Kormakur is set to produce and direct “Trapped,” an Icelandic crime skein.

Penned by Sigurjon Kjartansson and Clive Bradley,  the show (comprising 10 one-hour episodes) is based on an idea by Kormakur, whose credits span local pics like “The Deep” to Hollywood movies such as Mark Wahlberg starrer “2 Guns.”

Set in small town at the bottom of a fjord, “Trapped” follows the investigation of a grisly murder of an unidentifiable man found in the water following the arrival of a ferry.  Shortly after, a powerful blizzard hits the town with deadly force, making the only road in or out impassable.

The show will be produced by  Magnus Vidar Sigurdsson via RVK, Kormakur’s shingle. Dynamic Television’s Daniel March and Klaus Zimmermann will serve as exec producers and are introducing the series to buyers at Mip TV.

“I developed ‘Trapped’ because I was fascinated with the idea of a terrible crime in a small town cut off from the rest of the world,” said Kormakur.  “I am looking forward to putting a new spin on the Scandinavian crime genre for audiences around the world and I’m equally excited to be partnering with Dan and Klaus at Dynamic.”

RUV, Iceland’s public broadcaster, has commissioned the series.

“Our excitement about the originality and brilliance of the material is only surpassed by our thrill to work with Baltasar and a great team of talented creators,” said March.

Zimmermann concurred: “The show will not only transport audiences to a stunning and exotic location, but will follow characters on an emotional journey filled with breathtaking tension.”

Kormakur’s aim is directing the epic adventure “Everest,” starring Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes and Jake Gyllenhaal, for Universal Pictures, Cross Creek Pictures and Working Title Films.  “Everest” will be released Sept. 18, 2015.
