Thomas Lennon will play fussy Felix Unger to Matthew Perry’s Oscar Madison in the CBS remake of “The Odd Couple,” Variety has learned.

The half-hour multi-camera comedy pilot based on the famous Neil Simon characters comes via CBS Television Studios and is exec produced by Perry, who penned the pilot with “Frasier’s” Joe Keenan, with Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum and Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman.

Lennon, who appeared in “Sean Saves the World” and “Reno 911!,” is also known for his work behind the scenes. He’s an exec producer, with writing partner R. Ben Garant, of Chris Hardwick’s Comedy Central show “@midnight.” He also appeared with Perry on “Friends” and in the 2009 New Line film “17 Again.”

Lennon is represented by CAA, Peter Principato at Principato-Young and Karl Austen at JTWAMM.

“The Odd Couple” originated as a theater production and was adapted into the 1968 Jack Lemmon-Walter Matthau feature film before seeing two runs on ABC, the first of which starred Tony Randall and Jack Klugman. The second, titled “The New Odd Couple,” went after a minority audience and starred Ron Glass and Demond Wilson. A femme-focused version of the play opened on Broadway in 1985 and starred Sally Struthers and Rita Moreno.

  1. The Line says:

It just seems like there are going to be two Felixes. Oscar is a slob, and neither of these guys have that apparent quality. Perhaps in a performance, but there still has to be a fundamental physical presence.

  2. Giggy says:

Speaking of “Frasier”, I always thought that David Hyde Pierce would have made a great Felix Unger. As for Oscar, I kinda pictured Michael Keaton, but Keaton is so good, he could do either role. Anyone else agree?

  3. Giggy says:

I’m going to give this one a chance because I like both of the leads. If the chemistry is right, it could be very funny. The fact that someone who did “Frasier” is involved is a good sign in my book!

  4. The Line says:

When I heard this news, I mentioned it to a good friend. We both immediately thought it was a great idea to remake this TV series with Matthew Perry. We also both immediately thought Matthew would play the role of Felix. Not so much. Bad decision for Matthew, unfortunately, because I’m pretty sure everybody else on the planet will assume he is playing Felix. Matthew probably decided to play against type, which may be good in some situations. Not this one, however. Too bad. Probably a quick cancellation.
