Kesha, Ludacris and Josh Groban Join ABC’s ‘Rising Star’

Rising Star

Kesha and Ludacris have joined the panel of experts on ABC’s new singing competition, “Rising Star,” ABC has confirmed. They’ll appear alongside previously rumored country singer Brad Paisley, while singer-songwriter Josh Groban has been tapped as host. The four will appear together for the first time during ABC’s broadcast of the 2014 Billboard Music Awards — which Ludacris is hosting on May 18.

“Rising Star” relies solely on real-time audience voting via an app to determine the fortunes of its contestants, so Kesha, Ludacris and Paisley will offer feedback and advice rather than serve as typical judges. Hopefuls will be hidden from the studio audience and experts by a large video screen, which will only rise to reveal the singer to the studio and allow them to progress if their live votes reach a certain threshold. Viewers will have the chance to see their photos appear on the video screen when they cast their votes, which allows the singer to see their progress during their performance.

“American Idol” EP Ken Warwick and “The Voice’s” Nicolle Yaron will executive produce the series, which originated in Israel and has already sold in Russia, Germany, France and Italy. “Rising Star” will premiere on Sunday, June 22 at 9 p.m.

  2. Tom Geller says:

It wasn’t that much of a success. It was aired simultaneously to X-Factor, which did way better in the ratings. Most people in Israel remember it because of various scandals of the judges, more then the singer who won it.

  3. This concept was very successful in Israel, where the show started (as I understand it). But as a California resident, it irks me that I will have zero opportunity to participate, because I will end up seeing it on delay for my time zone. In the current universe where social media gets consumed along with our programs, delaying live shows to the West Coast is no longer a good model. I don’t know how it gets fixed, but you’re leaving a lot of America out of the loop.

  4. JAA says:

The judges on this show aren’t has-beens. They’re all still hugely successful. Paisley had some of his biggest hits of his career just last year and Kesha just had one of the biggest hits of her career this year. She’ll also have an album out later this year. Groban is still popular in easy listening and Ludacris will be releasing his 9th album soon. These are all big stars something these shows usually don’t get. They usually don’t attract judges at the height of their careers. Whether that helps ratings or not is another matter.

  5. Benedict Johnson says:

Isn’t it awesome when creative series with potential like Almost Human get cancelled, but pointless singing competition shows starred by has-beens keep getting produced?
