Kesha and Ludacris have joined the panel of experts on ABC’s new singing competition, “Rising Star,” ABC has confirmed. They’ll appear alongside previously rumored country singer Brad Paisley, while singer-songwriter Josh Groban has been tapped as host. The four will appear together for the first time during ABC’s broadcast of the 2014 Billboard Music Awards — which Ludacris is hosting on May 18.
“Rising Star” relies solely on real-time audience voting via an app to determine the fortunes of its contestants, so Kesha, Ludacris and Paisley will offer feedback and advice rather than serve as typical judges. Hopefuls will be hidden from the studio audience and experts by a large video screen, which will only rise to reveal the singer to the studio and allow them to progress if their live votes reach a certain threshold. Viewers will have the chance to see their photos appear on the video screen when they cast their votes, which allows the singer to see their progress during their performance.
“American Idol” EP Ken Warwick and “The Voice’s” Nicolle Yaron will executive produce the series, which originated in Israel and has already sold in Russia, Germany, France and Italy. “Rising Star” will premiere on Sunday, June 22 at 9 p.m.
