Borgella has been public with her diagnosis over the past year. Her family wrote that she died at 5:45 a.m. on Saturday.
“With heavy hearts, we are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Joanne,” her family wrote. “Her faith, courage and strength were unshaken throughout every obstacle she encountered. Although our family is suffering with this great loss, we find comfort in the closeness Joanne shared with the Lord.”
Appearing in “American Idol’s” seventh season, New York-born Borgella made it the top 24. This was three years after she became the first winner of “Mo’Nique’s Fat Chance,” a competition for plus-size models.
After “Mo’Nique’s Fat Chance,” Borgella would go on to model for such brands as Macy’s, Ashley Stewart and Nordstrom. The Haitian-American singer also appeared in NUVOtv’s “Curvy Girls,” which followed her modeling career.
Borgella last updated fans on her condition in September, writing on Facebook that she was heading to radiation for two procedures.
