  1. Johnny Carson was the best. Letterman is insipid.Longevity itself does not mean talent. He should have been kicked off the air a few years ago for his sexual exploitation of his employees.

  2. Kern says:

It’s interesting that some in the industry only want fawning posts from those in the industry. Sadly, it is true that Letterman is retiring well after the end of his glory days.

Letterman’s diminished popularity resulting from his cranky nastiness, smugly superior arrogant attitude, and, when he hosted the Oscars, his exposure as an vain, overrated hothouse flower who lost his entire aura of being a super nova when exposed in the light of a larger environment.

Given his shriveled public image, it is only his ego and paycheck that could have caused the undeniably brilliant Letterman not to have walked away sooner. Given these characteristics, it is likely that even now Letterman would not have done so without a strong nudge from CBS.

Penske: This in an industry trade, not ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY. Please restrict reader comments to paid industry subscribers only. The constant crap posted by the dregs who drift in from the Drudge Page link weakens VARIETY’s credibility and position in the industry overall.

  4. Michael says:

Nice tribute, Lena, you self centered twit.

I agree–I’m a fan of her show, but that comment was graceless and tone-deaf…Show some respect and appreciation…

  5. Sydney says:

You guys do realize that it was most likely not Obama that posted that tweet. He has people run his twitter. And even if it was, who cares? It was one tweet not a novel!

  6. DorothyParkerlite says:

Really? An icon is retiring and the only thing two negative people can say is how the President took 2 seconds to comment. Jeez. So, I guess you guys must have no lives. Explains everything.

    • Sydney says:

My bad. The mobile site messed me up I didn’t mean to directly reply to your comment

Obama commenting on this. I hope he was at the foreign policy briefing first. I can’t believe this. Plus he went to 3 fund raisers last night after the FT hood shootings.

  8. CEO1 says:

Gee, Valerie Obama is so cool. He tweeted about Letterman.

  9. feckless president says:

the president of the USA is commenting on this???? Really??? What about the Russian troops on the border of Ukraine???Isn’t that more important???

    • sammyglick says:

When he’s done planning the invasion of Syria (to avenge Benghazi) and Iran, he’ll get to Russia…is there NOT a place in the world the RW nuts and Tea Party cranks want us to bomb?! Violence doesn’t solve everything international dispute.

    • Smooth says:

NO. In 2008 when Putin invaded Georgia (the other Georgia not in america) Bush was President. Bush went to the Olympics, you wing nuts seems to forget that.

      • sammyglick says:

Those Wing-Nuts oddly have amnesia about both the Presidency and the World itself prior to the day Pres. Obama took office in 2008! It must be strange to think the world started a scant six years ago!
