Argentine networks ties down top hits from Brazilian TV giant

MADRID — Two of Latin America’s broadcast network heavyweights – Brazil’s Globo and Argentina’s Telefe – have inked what Globo describes as an “important” three-year agreement for the Telefonica-owned Telefe to broadcast Globo telenovelas.

The pact will “amplify considerably the space for Brazilian drama on the television in Argentina,” Globo said in a statement Monday.

The Globo-Telefe agreements rolls off the phenomenal success on Telefe of one of Globo’s biggest telenovela hits, the Intl. Emmy-nominated “Brazil Avenue,” whose final episode was seen by 80 million Brazilians in October 2012.

Bowing in a 4:30 p.m. Dec. 16 slot, “Brazil Avenue” has helped Telefe to an eight months-long ratings leadership over rival Canal 13 through May. The story of a young woman’s vengeance against her evil stepmother, “Brazil Avenue” was moved to a primetime slot in April when it went head-to-head against Marcelo Tinelli’s ratings juggernaut “ShowMatch,” scoring 20.6 rating in May, just six percentage points below Tinelli’s classic talent contest, Argentina’s highest-rated TV show in 2010 and 2011.

Telefe also broadcasts “Brave Woman,” written by Gloria Perez, the award-winning author of “The Clone,” and “Irrational Heart.”

Next up on Telefe may well be “Trail of Lies,” which climaxed in Brazil to a 48% rating and 75% share, and is already punching strong ratings on Portuguese broadcast network SIC. It was one of the highlights of Globo’s 2014 sales slate and recently shopped at NATPE Europe in Prague.

Mixing intrigue, romance, revenge and doses of comedy, and written by Walcyr Carrasco (“Gabriela,” “The Thorn and the Rose”) “Lies” turns on Paloma, whose baby is stolen at birth by her scheming brother Felix and discovered in a rubbish bin by the honest-to-God Bruno.
