FremantleMedia Creates Spain-Based Operation, Taps Nathalie

Seasoned TV exec to serve as CEO of FremantleMedia Espana

MADRID – FremantleMedia is setting up shop directly in Spain, tapping seasoned TV executive Nathalie Garcia to head up a new Madrid-based office as CEO.

Garcia will report directly to FremantleMedia CEO Cecile Frot Coutaz. She is charged with the strategic vision and overall management of the business, as well as developing and producing programming for broadcasters in the market.

Garcia previously served as CEO for Spain and Portugal of Plural Entertainmemt. part of Spain’s Prisa Group, and as CEO of Notro TV.

With TV advertising plunging about 50% from a 2007 pre-crisis peak, Spain’s TV market has seen huge restructuring in recent years with production budgets cut back to the bone. In such a context, Garcia who was behind reality TV show “Hermano mayor” and novela adaptation “Belmonte” –  is a key asset to a company seeking to explore production opportunities not only for its own benefit but also that of its broadcaster clients as well.

“Having a presence in Spain is an important step in FremantleMedia’s growth strategy for southern Europe,” said Frot-Coutaz.

“Nathalie’s impressive track record in understanding the Iberian television market and her expertise working with key broadcasters to develop successful originations and local format productions will be invaluable in helping us to gain a foothold in this market, as we seek to broaden our global presence further,” she added.

Garcia added: “FremantleMedia has a worldwide reputation as a high quality television producer with an international network of production offices that feed and supply one another. I’m very much looking forward to working with such a global business, helping to build FremantleMedia Espana’s operation. I can’t wait to work with local broadcasters on FremantleMedia’s impressive catalogue of brands like ‘Family Feud,’ ‘Got Talent,’ ‘The X Factor,’ ‘Idols’ and ‘The Price is Right’ in order to build a 360 degree business that encompasses television and digital.”

At Notro TV, Garcia produced “Doctor Mateo,” a Spanish version of the U.K.’s “Doc Martin” which, set in an exquisite Spanish north-coast fishing village, posted healthy prime time rating for commercial broadcast network Antena 3. Garcia originally came to notice as SVP distribution and production for Sony Pictures Television International, where she created Sony´s TV office in the territory, heading up the company for 10 years.
