Fox Renews ‘The Following,’ ‘New Girl,’ More

New Girl Ratings Super Bowl-Prince

Fox has renewed comedies “New Girl,” “Mindy Project” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” as well as psycho-thriller “The Following,” for its 2014-15 season, the network announced today.

“These shows are some of the best and acclaimed series on television, with influential, culture-driving stars, and some of the best, most creative talent behind the camera,” said Fox chairman Kevin Reilly and COO Joe Earley. “All four are core assets within our 2014-15 portfolio of content, and we’re really happy to bring them back to our FOX fans for another season.”

None of the four is a particularly big ratings draw, but the network needs core returning pieces since it;s losing “The X Factor,” which occupied three hours of its sked last fall.

The profile of Andy Samberg-Andre Braugher laffer “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” was raised in January when it was a surprise winner at the Golden Globes. While “Mindy Project” isn’t high-rated, it is a show with a niche fan base that the network appreciates. “New Girl” has fallen off this season, but is still Fox’s top live-action comedy, while “The Following’s” second season isn’t performing as well as its strong rookie season.

“Glee,” “Sleepy Hollow” and “Bones” are hours that have already been renewed.

Among the dramas that Fox has yet to decide on is rookie show “Almost Human.”

I really didn’t think Mindy project was going to make it!

  2. Honestly they should renew Almost Human just to be fair. The failing of the series is based on the big stupid FOX-made error to the episodes in a complete different order.

I wish The Following was good. I stuck with it through the first season and a little of this season, trying to overlook the conundrum-shortcuts and stalls, and now I have finally given up. My “last straw?” The episode where a DEADLY antagonist is bound to a flimsy bed frame with a single pair of conventional handcuffs.
Oh–and did I mention that this deadly nemesis was left unattended in the motel room for no good reason, and given lots of time to effect an escape?
Tip to the writers: honor the work ethic of the Breaking Bad staff. When VG & Co. painted themselves into a corner (which they did often–much to the glee of fans), they worked until they had come up with a resolution that was surprising and satisfying for the audience, and not one that turned their characters into idiots.
