Damian Lewis Play Henry VIII BBC/PBS

“Homeland” star Damian Lewis is moving from the gallows to the British throne, signing on to play Henry VIII in the BBC/PBS miniseries “Wolf Hall.”

Mark Rylance will costar as Thomas Cromwell in the mini that traces Cromwell’s rise from blacksmith’s son to the heights of the Tudor court. Mini is based on Hilary Mantel’s series of novels.

Claire Foy and Jonathan Pryce are also in the large ensemble cast. Peter Kosminsky (“White Oleander”) will direct from a script by Peter Straughan (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”).

The six-part mini is set to air on BBC 2 and PBS’ “Masterpiece” drama series next year. Company Pictures and Playground are producing for BBC and “Masterpiece. Colin Callender exec produces for Playground, John Yorke for Company Pictures, Polly Hill, for BBC 2, Rebecca Eaton for “Masterpiece,” Martin Rakusen for BBC Worldwide and Tim Smith for Prescience and Altus Productions.

Lewis nabbed an Emmy in 2011 and a Golden Globe in 2013 for his work on “Homeland.”
