Celestial Unveils Sir Run Run Shaw Tribute

HONG KONG – Celestial Classic Movies, the movie channel built around the Shaw Brothers film library, will mark the death of Sir Run Run Shaw with a rescheduling of its line-up next week.

It will screen “Shaw Showcase: In Memory of Sir Run Run Shaw,” a half hour special featuring interviews and tributes from numerous stars launched by the Shaw Brothers studios. It will follow that with the screening of 1959 film “The Kingdom and the Beauty” (pictured), one of the most critically-acclaimed films the studio produced and winner of the best picture award at the 6th Asia Pacific Film Festival.

Celestial Pictures is the company formed 10 years ago by Malaysian billionaire Ananda Krishnan with the intention of restoring and reviving the 760-title Shaw collection. Its TV channels, including Celestial Movies and Celestial Classic Movies, were sold off in 2012 into a joint venture Celestial Tiger Entertainment.

“Few men in Asia have lived a greater life than Sir Run Run Shaw, the man who built the legendary Shaw Brothers Studio and founded the TVB broadcasting empire, and lived to bear witness to the fruits of his vision. Often credited as the man who made the Hong Kong film industry world-famous as the ‘Hollywood of the East,’ Sir Run Run Shaw passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 106 yesterday,” Celestial Tiger Entertainment said Wednesday in a preliminary statement.
