Tony Phelan and Joan Rater

CBS has given a put pilot order to a legal drama penned by “Grey’s Anatomy” veterans Tony Phelan and Joan Rater.

The pair are developing the project through their new overall deal with CBS Television Studios. Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly (“Masters of Sex,” “Elementary”) are also shepherding and exec producing with Phelan and Rater.

Story revolves around a female defense attorney who falls for a client accused of a brutal crime. Her pursuit of his defense reverberates throughout her previously well-ordered life.

Phelan and Rater (pictured) at present are consulting producers on CBS’ frosh drama “Madam Secretary.” The two spent the past 10 seasons on “Grey’s Anatomy.” Phelan also helmed several episodes of the ABC drama, including its musical episode from season eight, “Song Beneath the Song.”

Phelan and Rater are with UTA and attorney David Fox. Timberman and Beverly are with CAA.
