Canal Plus Captures ‘Hostages’

PARIS– French pay TV leader Canal Plus has acquired Israeli thriller drama hit “Hostages.”

The 10-part series was created, penned and directed by Omri Givon and Rotem Shamir. Chaim Sharir is exec-producing.

Ayelet Zurer (“Man of Steel”) toplines as a renown Israeli surgeon whose family gets kidnapped. She is unwittingly thrown into a political conspiracy when she is ordered to sabotage a routine operation on the President, or her family will die. Zurer stars opposite Yair Lotan (“Homeland”).

Canal Plus will roll out the series in March. It bowed on Channel 10 in Israel last October and has garnered solid ratings. A U.S. version with Dylan McDermott and Toni Collette aired in the U.S. on CBS.

Hostages” will compete at the FIPA festival on Jan. 22 in Biarritz.

Armoza handles international sales on the series.

“We are thrilled that Canal Plus have taken on this gripping series, and proud that they have chosen ‘Hostages’ as their first Israeli drama,” said Avi Armoza. “‘Hostages’ really demonstrates that Israeli formats can and do travel well in the international market.”

The original series was also recently acquired by the BBC.
