NBC is reteaming with Bill Cosby and producer Tom Werner on a family comedy.

While there is no pilot order and no studio is attached, NBC has confirmed that they are hiring writers and Cosby would star “as a patriarch in a multigenerational family.”

“The Cosby Show,” which Werner produced through his production company with Marcy Carsey, ran from 1984 to 1992 on NBC. The sitcom “Cosby,” which the comedian developed with John Markus and also costarred actress Phylicia Rashad, ran from 1996 to 2000 on CBS.

Partnerships with 1980s and ’90s TV stars seems to be a theme at NBC, where “The Michael J. Fox Show” is limping along in ratings. (Tim Allen’s “Last Man Standing” on ABC is doing better). The Cosby news happened a day after NBC announced it was scrapping its “Murder She Wrote” reboot with Octavia Spencer.

Deadline Hollywood broke the news of the Cosby partnership.

Good for Cos, I just hope he’s not playing some dithering old fool

There was a wonderful but little known series about a lady who ran a detective agency in Africa….really delightful. A little “sleuthing” could easily turn up the name. Really fine little show could make a very pleasant “FIT” for Octavia Spencer.

Such a joy it was….something about ….LADIES DETECTIVE AGENCY.

    Anyone know?

    • Sumaya says:

The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency is the show you are talking about. It was on HBO, and it really was a fantastic show, but nobody watched so it was cancelled. Jill Scott played the protagonist, and it was set in Botswana, a country in Southern Africa. I would love the show to be brought back, but only under the right circumstances, and although I see where you are going Octavia Spencer would not do the show justice. She could not master the accent without being disrespectful.

Octovia deserved better than having to recreate a much remembered, and beloved, character. Hopefully NBC will find something new and fresh that is truly worthy of her considerable talents. Cosby is credited with saving NBC once but his CBS sitcom wasn’t as successful. Can he do it again? if anyone can then maybe it’s the Cos. Unfortunately, with very few exceptions (think Newhart, although even his third sitcom lasted only one season) the track record is less than favorable. Dick Van Dyke and Andy Griffith both had future successes but switched from comedy to drama.
