Alfonso Ribeiro is best known for portraying the nebbish Carlton Banks on hit ’90s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” — and on Monday night’s “Dancing with the Stars,” he flawlessly channeled his younger self for an energetic performance of “The Carlton,” the catchy dance that became his character’s trademark on the Will Smith comedy when paired with Tom Jones’ “It’s Not Unusual.”
It was worth the wait for the fans (who gave Ribeiro and partner Witney Carson a standing ovation) and the judges, who gave the performance a perfect score of 40. Ribeiro admitted he’d been reluctant to perform the beloved routine over the years after his “Fresh Prince” role left him pigeonholed and unable to find other jobs, but he’s since softened towards both the character and the dance.
“This was all for the fans — I’ve been wanting to do this for them forever,” he said after the performance, which was tied to the week’s theme of the contestants’ Most Memorable Year. “This is a moment I’ve dreamed about for many a year… I went back in time.”
