World Cup: England Game Delivers Best U.K. Audience Since Olympics

LONDON — The World Cup soccer match between England and Uruguay on Thursday, which both sides needed to win in order to have a good chance of staying in the competition, attracted a peak audience in the U.K. of 20.3 million viewers, the highest TV ratings in the U.K. since the London 2012 Olympics.

ITV’s coverage, which started at 7 p.m. U.K. time, won an average audience of 13.1 million, a 55% share.

Both goals for Uruguay were scored by star player Luis Suarez, who plays for an English club, Liverpool. England’s goal was scored by Manchester United star Wayne Rooney.

Thursday’s peak audience was higher than the 17.29 million who watched British tennis star Andy Murray win at Wimbledon on BBC last year.

The soccer match failed to beat the U.K. audience for the opening and closing ceremonies of the London 2012 Olympics, which attracted peak audiences of 27 million and 26 million respectively.
