Silvio Berlusconi Sex Conviction Overturned

LONDON — TV mogul and former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has won the appeal against his conviction for paying for sex with an underage prostitute and abuse of power.

The billionaire, who heads the Mediaset TV empire, was sentenced by a court in June 2013 to seven years in prison following the guilty verdict, which was overturned by a Milan court Friday.

Prosecutors can appeal the ruling to Italy’s highest appeals court, but it is unlikely to come to a decision until next year.

It is alleged that Berlusconi had sex with Karima “Ruby” El Mahroug when she was 17 years old. Both Berlusconi and El Mahroug deny that this was the case. He is also accused of abuse of power after he allegedly asked police — while he was prime minister — to release El Mahroug from custody after she was arrested on a theft charge.

Berlusconi is now serving community service for a one-year conviction for tax fraud. He will complete that service in February.
