Russia's Channel One Cancels Live Oscar

Channel extends coverage of Vladimir Putin's intervention in Ukraine

LONDON — Russia’s state-controlled network Channel One has cancelled its live coverage of the Oscars in order to cover the crisis in Ukraine.

The channel was due to show the awards between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m. Moscow time on Monday, AFP reported Sunday.

In a statement, Channel One said: “Due to the large amount of news concerning the situation in Crimea and Ukraine, and the audience’s rising interest in news programs, Channel One considers it impossible to air the Oscars ceremony for five hours, particularly in the morning.”

It added that the awards would be aired at midnight on Monday instead.

Yury Gladilshchikov, a film critic for Moskovskiye Novosti newspaper, who had been invited to be a commentator for the Oscar ceremony, said he was told late Sunday that live coverage had been cancelled.

“They are gathering politicians for the morning programming,” Gladilshchikov said on Facebook.

Russian media has demonstrated unwavering support for Vladimir Putin’s intervention in Ukraine.

“Our propaganda on state channels is really running wild,” commented former economy minister Andrei Nechayev on Twitter.

Channel One is 51% owned by the state, and 49% by private shareholders. The Russian broadcasting scene is dominated by channels that are either run directly by the Kremlin or owned by companies with close links to the government, such as Gazprom.

  1. Oh, No, Not the Oscars! How will the Russians ever get to sleep…..

  2. rick says:

Do you think that the fact that the host was Gay and being Gay is illegal in Russia was a factor? Also unlike the U.S., when they are about to go to War, they get serious rather than Silly.

  3. We cancelled it at our home too. Where’s the outcry? Where’s the news article? Doesn’t anyone care?!!!

  4. moezy says:

    Didn’t miss anything – that’s for sure!

  5. fear of an american actor saying negative comments about putin….

  6. jsanjuan1967 says:

Shame on Russia’s behavior on Ukraine!

  7. 2atyahoo says:

When is the Academy going to give women equal rights? The need to stop segregating the work of women and men, and get rid of the “actress” category and have an award for performance in a leading role, as well as one for a supporting role. Female actors can be just as good in their trade as men actors. It’s time the Academy quits treating people differently because of gender.

  8. wellarmed lamb says:

Honestly…..the constant worship of hollywood in this country is getting quite old and boring….

  9. masterofallhesurveys says:

Too bad they didn’t cancel it here.

  10. says:

It is not “the Ukraine.” That is like saying “the Russia.”

  11. jc says:

Did the thought of wanting to move to Russia really cross my thoughts? WOW that’s how rotten the american culture has become.

  12. Ed says:

Move to Russia you neo cons if you wanna go kiss Putin’s communist ass.

  13. readmylips says:

Good decision. I cancelled mine, too.

  14. Joe says:

I canceled coverage many years ago. As did other Americans.

  16. Gary Driver says:

Well I cancelled coverage on my tv too as well…now THAT is news…

  17. Peter says:

They did not have live coverage , oh the horror.

  18. And how are things different here? Lefty journalists (and I use that term loosely) do the same thing and far worse here – DAILY.

  19. maryh3 says:

Too late -we’re just a country full of losers now. Stick a fork in the US,, it’s done.

  20. Les Redmon says:

Why would Russia want to air a program from sexual deviant America? Russia has anti-sexual deviant laws. It makes no sense.

  21. Norbert G. Ginsel says:

Russia canceled coverage? OOh NO! How will we survive?

  22. Bobby H. says:

We need an autocratic, dissension-squashing, warmongering tyrant? No thanks.

  23. JWag says:

I do not see why man should not be just as cruel as nature.

    -Adolf Hitler

MR KGB comes out of the dark at last.

  24. Mizzi says:

I saw Gravity and it sucked. Should give technical awards to a movie that is worth watching. Didn’t see the other two, but they are obvious political agenda movies. Oscar’s suck.

    • Mizzi says:

… by the way, the drama of gravity was based on the Russians blowing up one of the satellites. Guess all three were political… I was wondering why they would give so many Oscars to a movie as bad as Gravity.

  25. Laurie says:

Oh oh. Milling Ukranians is one thing, but now the Russians have insulted Obama’s Hollywood buddies! Thats a step too far for President Obozo.

  26. John Clark says:

Oh c’mon. Simplistic rubbish! Wars start when an irresistible force meets an immovable object. That situation has to be avoided at all costs if WWIII is to be avoided. Obama did exactly the right thing. He dutifully rattled his sword, and did not make a threat that he could not back out of. What we see is that all of Russia would like to welcome the Ukraine back into the fold where half of Ukraine wants to be. The other half looks West. The country may well split in half and resolve the standoff in much the same way that Ireland did back in the twenties. Obama made like a statesman, with an eye on the world situation, not just the United States. Let him be.

  27. Jasonn says:

I think I’d rather watch news coverage of the Russians invading another country instead of the Oscars.

  28. rastus says:

Don’t forget that 15-20 years before the outbreak of WW2, the British and the French had lost so many men in WW1 that there was no taste at any cost for another European war.

  29. rastus says:

Who can blame them for canceling the Oscars? Hardly anyone watches it anyway.

  30. Hezekiah says:

Now they’ve gone and done it. The blood will flow now.

  31. You don’t get it. This story is of major concern to Russians because Ukraine is just south of Moscow. If war broke out in Florida don’t you think the people in New York would be pretty concerned? Probably more concerned than watching people wear $20,000 dresses to win arbitrary awards in a language they don’t speak?

  32. bill says:

Why can’t someone in the US do that for all of us? A leader that will do anything to put his countr on top and one who will also not cow-tow to the unHolyweird love of f@gs and political correctness. Russia is looking better and better

  33. caruhsel says:

You’ve climbed a notch in my opinion Russia. To cancel the Oskarz, is all the proof I need that you are far ahead of the U.S. in the intellectual arena. Congratulations!

  34. AC says:

I’d rather watch static than the oscars.

  35. Bokshil Kim says:

Atlanta radio and TV media covered the 2 inch snow storm 24/7

  36. jnsesq says:

It would seem that the Russkies know how to take action while our present Occupier-in-Chief ponders how best to deploy his Unicorn Cavalry.

    • And what would a Republican President do in the same situation Obama finds himself in? The same thing one did when Putin “Remilitarized the Rhineland” when he went into Georgia in 2008. That being nothing.

When faced with a nation that can fight back, the same crowd that screamed for war against Iraq turned into paper tigers against Russia. The flight suit wearing “He-man” President Bush was exposed as the posing fraud he really was.

To take a stand against Russia means being willing to risk nuclear war for the Ukraine, an area Russia sees as being of its vital national interest. That’s not going to happen,so get off making this about only about Obama.

Its not in the American national interest to fight for those people,so why bother issuing any demands we would have to back by military force,?

No sane President would ever cross that line if his bluff was called. America’s role in World War 2 was not about freeing any single nation from Nazi domination. That was a side effect. It was to prevent Nazi assimilation of the resources of Europe that could threaten the US in the future. Putin and the Russians have no such agenda for western Europe or even former eastern block states in NATO.

Its a matter of simple reality.

      • bgh179 says:

“Putin and the Russians have no such agenda for western Europe or even former eastern block states in NATO.”

You’re kidding yourself if you believe that. Russia is a nation that’s nearly landlocked…the loss of the Crimean peninsula would be devastating. It’s all about resources.

  37. joe63 says:

at least they got something right.

  38. John Campbell says:

Russia canceled airing the Oscars? NOOOOOOO! OH! the shame of it all.

Now if we could only accomplish the same thing here in the U.S. Putin has sure got a up one on that one.

  39. Fork It says:

    Thanks, Kelly. Agreed.

  40. Maddy M says:

I sure can’t blame ’em for that. Talk about a waste of air time.

  41. naro10 says:

Nobody in the world gives a hoot about Hollywood’s Oscars that celebrate the garbage produced by Hollywood, and the silly facial gesticulations that are mistaken for acting therein. To think that foreign nations are glued to the Oscar ceremony is just PR nonsense.

  42. Fork It says:

No longer duped. Films are propaganda and social engineering manipulation. Done. Back to books.

  43. carl cline says:

I like how Obama’s so concerned about the integrity of Ukraine’s border
but does everything in his power to destroy the southern border of
the US with Mexico.

  44. myselfandi says:

Who gives a crap about the oscars?

  45. schm0e says:

Cancelled the Oscars? Who says Putin doesn’t have a heart?

  46. MeMe says:

The next thing you know Putin will be on the iew telling them how pretty he is !

  47. People say there is a RACE problem. People say this RACE problem will be solved when the third world pours into EVERY and ONLY into White countries.

People say the only solution to the RACE problem is if ALL and ONLY White countries “assimilate,” i.e., intermarry, with all those non-Whites.

But if I tell that obvious truth about the ongoing program of genocide against White people, Anti-Whites agree that I am a naziwhowantstokillsixmillionjews.

    Anti-racist is a codeword for anti-White.

    • Fork It says:

Alan, we got the message and realize we should not have been so compassionate and open to what has turned out to be dangerous ingrates. Doubtful that they understand what is happening they are so focused on their own “plans.” History, you know.

  48. carl cline says:

The west should just relax. It’s not like Putin is threatening to destroy
the Ukraine with ObamaCare or flood the country with 20 million Mexicans.

  49. hal says:

but what about the rainbows? my goodness.

  50. hal says:

where are his priorities? i mean really. honestly, this is unfathomable.
