Israeli TV Game Shows Raise the Stakes at MIP

TEL AVIV – Israel is upping its game ahead of April’s MIPTV, with two new game show formats set to be shopped at the content market.

Media goliath Keshet, which dominated October’s Mipcom with its interactive talent show “Rising Star,” will unveil “BOOM!,” a trivia game in which teams of four must correctly answer a series of knowledge-based questions or risk the explosion of a fake bomb. Multiple-choice questions are presented by colored bomb wires, and players must cut the right wire or set off a set-shaking explosion.

Keshet execs hope “BOOM!,” which will air on Israel’s Channel 2 beginning in April, will deliver a jolt to the game-show genre and get them back into primetime.

The format is likely to go head to head with another game show offering, “The Big Picture” — a reboot on the get-rich-quick game show model that allows home viewers to play along and potentially cash in at the same time as participants.

Like “Rising Star,” “The Big Picture” loops home viewers into the action, but with $1 million available to both home and in-studio players, the stakes are higher. Participants must correctly identify a series of pictures, while viewers at home can follow along via an integrated app. A stumped player can ask for help from a home viewer, and when the two link up, the cash prize is split between the two.

Created by beloved Israeli mentalist and produced by newcomer A Capella, “The Big Picture” will be sold first to overseas auds before hitting screens here.
