Discovery Buys BAFTA-Winning Production Company Raw

Company won a BAFTA for Bart Layton's 'The Imposter'

LONDON — Discovery Communications has acquired U.K. production company Raw, which won a BAFTA last year for Bart Layton’s documentary feature “The Imposter.”

Raw has a prolific factual output, and last year produced more than 100 hours of television. In the U.S. it produces “Gold Rush,” which airs on the Discovery Channel worldwide, and is the channel’s highest-rating series of all time; “Locked Up Abroad” for National Geographic, which is the longest-running series in the network’s history; and “Paranormal Witness,” which continues to grow its audience for SyFy.

The company, which was founded by Dimitri Doganis and Layton, recently moved to ramp up its feature film slate with the appointment of Katherine Butler as head of its film and TV drama division.

“We are delighted to be joining forces with Discovery in a deal that strengthens our ability to tell great stories and bring them to new audiences as well as provides the resources and freedom we need to grow Raw,” Doganis said.
