Q&A: Michael Strahan Talks Morning TV, Super Bowl

There’s a new king of morning TV, and he’s got a Giant personality. Former NFL player Michael Strahan — who’s been co-hosting “Live! with Kelly and Michael” since 2012 — recently added correspondent at “Good Morning America” to his early morning responsibilities.

What did you learn as a football player that’s benefited you on morning TV?

Teamwork. Observation. Trusting other people to make sure that they’ve got the best for the team. Being able to be coached. And not assuming that you know everything and being open to listening to someone’s advice on
what’s best.

How do you juggle all of your jobs?
Time management. I don’t do anything I don’t want to do. There are so many opportunities that come my way, but if there’s something out there that I don’t want to do, I truly don’t do it, because I have to maximize my time. If there’s truly an opportunity to be quiet and be by myself, I do it.

How do you find the calm?
Man, figure out where you fit on the team. Don’t try to do too much. Figure out where you fit on the team and maximize what you do within that. Do what I need to do, and don’t do something that’s not in my wheelhouse until I learn how to do it properly.

What are your strengths as a morning show host?
Improvising. Positive. Funny. I just try to be somebody who you want to wake up to. Even in bad situations, always try to find the good. Everyone wants someone who’ll make them laugh a little. and that’s what I try to do.

What’s harder, hosting a morning show or playing in the Super Bowl?
Definitely the Super Bowl! It’s not easy to do morning TV. A lot of people think you just show up and be yourself, but one of the hardest things to do is be yourself when the camera comes on. But after morning TV, I’m not sore the next day. So I’ve got to give the edge to football.
