Half a century after Humphrey Bogart and Bette Davis taught their kids to fish in the trout ponds of Sportsmen’s Lodge, the historic Studio City motel has gotten a makeover that restores much of its midcentury resort style. Fishing, sadly, is no longer offered, but the six-acre property’s ponds and gardens make a lush backdrop for events. The hotel is convenient for bizzers in town working at CBS Studio Center, Universal, Warner Bros. or Disney.
Eat: The pool-view Patio Cafe offers modernized “TV dinners” like beer-battered fish ’n chips and bacon-wrapped meatloaf as well as fish tacos, campfire chili and the classic Brown Derby Cobb salad.
Drink: Cocktails include the Fred and Ginger with bourbon and ginger beer; and the Blonde Bombshell with gin, fresh lemonade and basil.
Stay: The biggest pool in the San Fernando Valley is the focal point of the 190-room hotel, which includes numerous suites with large workspaces.
