CANNES: Robert Pattinson Shares His Thoughts on Returning to ‘Twilight’

Whoever worried this year’s Cannes Film Festival was short on stars only needed to take a stroll through the Vanity Fair Party on Saturday night at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, which looked like the Oscars in May.

Justin Bieber shook hands with fans and posed for snapshots. Jennifer Lawrence lounged with her “Hunger Games” stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. Harrison Ford and Sylvester Stallone (in a white tux) were there, too, alongside Julianne Moore, Guy Pearce, Kelsey Grammer, Scott Speedman and Adrian Grenier.

But the actor with the biggest smile on his face may have been Robert Pattinson, who earned some of his best reviews yet for “The Rover,” the Australian action film directed by David Michod which screened to critics over the weekend. He also had strong buzz going into Monday’s competition debut of “Maps to the Stars,” a drama directed by David Cronenberg.

“He’s incredibly respectful,” Pattinson told Variety, saying he would love to collaborate with Cronenberg again. The two first worked together on 2012’s “Cosmopolis.”

Pattinson said that he’s getting ready to shoot actor Brady Corbet’s directorial debut, “The Childhood of a Leader.” He added that “Brady is just brilliant.” And Pattinson revealed that he’s been talking to “Spring Breakers” director Harmony Korine about starring in one of his upcoming projects, although the details haven’t been worked out yet.

Pattinson acknowledged the role of Edward Cullen that made him an international superstar came as a complete surprise.

“No one thought it was going to be a big deal,” Pattinson said of the 2008 vampire movie. “We thought it was going to be like ‘Thirteen,'” he said, referencing the directorial debut of Catherine Hardwicke.

“I couldn’t do another ‘Twilight’ movie,” said Pattinson, who is 28. “I’m too old.”

  1. Rob and Liam, two great guys who dumped their crazy girlfriends

  2. msgramps says:

I’m thinking if he was to do another Twilight Saga movie, I don’t believe it would hurt his new found image, I’m sure it will set the movie industry (Hollywood) in a new category for making blockbuster saga movies. And also, it will send Twilight die hard fans into a frenzy heart attack….at the end of the day it’s all about the MONEY.

  3. Monica Allen says:

There is a time to move on from whatever movie or franchise made you a star and the time is now for Pattinson. To make another Twilight film would be a HUGE step backward in a career that is finally getting recognition for work other than the “sparkly vampire” role. His reviews at Cannes – especially The Rover have been excellent and hopefully one day he can leave Edward behind for good.

  4. cnguyen1031 says:

It’s his nice way of saying that he would never do a Twilight movie again. It’s been known that he is not a huge fan of the series, but at least he was smart enough to be vague about it.

  5. Tina Maitre says:

Rob I don’t think anyone would care that you have aged. One more movie would top the charts. People who are still fans of the twilight
Saga would go nuts! One more, will you think about it please???

  6. Daniel Garrett Irwin says:

Pattinson seems to do a very good job distancing himself from the franchise that shall not be named. All will be revealed when I see “The Rover”

  7. Joel says:

Reboot of Twilight (and mega-box office) announcement in 5, 4, 3…

  8. vivica says:

You should make another twilight so it can go with what aro said at the ending and I dont care if you are to old I like jacob now then so please go with making another one

  9. WILEEN says:

ROB you would never be too old to do another TWILIGHT! SWEET DOLLBABY ROB!

  10. Megan says:

Wow. The thing he talks the least about becomes the headline. Nobody cares about Twilight anymore. You got him to talk about his films and yet you ask him about a film that was over 2 years ago? He isn’t there to promote a film that’s over with.

  11. Robin says:

I think at this point Robert Pattinson has done enough at Cannes to warrant a Cannes headline that isn’t about Twilight, don’t you?
