Stooges Drummer Scott Asheton Dead 64

Scott Asheton, drummer and founding member of Iggy & the Stooges, died Saturday of an unspecified illness. He was 64. Iggy Pop confirmed the news on his Facebook page Sunday.

“My dear friend Scott Asheton passed away last night,” Pop said.

“Scott was a great artist, I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton. He was like my brother. He and Ron have left a huge legacy to the world. The Asheton’s have always been and continue to be a second family to me.”

Asheton helped form the band in 1967, and played with them through last year’s “Ready to Die” LP. His brother Ron, also a founding member and guitarist for the band, died in 2009.

    1. David says:

A great drummer and the nicest guy in the band by far. He anchored the stooges with wry humor, solid pounding, and, when the tune could use it, tasteful contrapuntal rhythmic statements. Rock on, Scott…
