‘Soul Train’ Aims to Pull Into Broadway Station

'Soul Train' Aims Pull Into Broadway

Rock of Ages” producer Matthew Weaver has acquired the stage rights to “Soul Train” with an eye toward turning the property into a Broadway musical.

The producer has already begun the hunt for a creative team for the new tuner, which would aim to capitalize on audience familiarity with the TV series that was a long-running tube spotlight for R&B, soul and hip-hop acts as well as for the troupe of dancers who performed on the show every week.

The potential adaptation looks poised to mirror the half-musical/half-party atmosphere conjured by the original stage production of “Rock of Ages,” while drawing on the appeal of a trove of familiar pop hits along the lines not only of “Rock of Ages” but also of “Motown” and of this season’s Carole King musical, “Beautiful.”

Weaver and his company, MediaWeaver Entertainment, acquired the rights from Soul Train Holdings, chaired by Earvin “Magic” Johnson. No development or production timeline has yet been set.
