MTC, Ars Nova Partnership Premieres First New Stage Production

The partnership between big-league Gotham nonprofit Manhattan Theater Club and scrappy new-work developer Ars Nova will yield its first full production with “By the Water,” a new play by Sharyn Rothstein (pictured above) that bows this fall at City Center.

Hal Brooks (“No Child,” “Thom Pain”) directs the world premiere, about a couple fighting to rebuild their Staten Island community in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

The play was commissioned by the Writer’s Room, the initiative that pairs MTC (“Proof,” “Doubt”) with Off Broadway’s Ars Nova (“Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812”). The developmental program also has tapped scribes Adam Bock, Samuel D. Hunter and Thomas Bradshaw, among others, to create new work.

“By the Water” plays City Center Stage II — the smallest of MTC’s three performance venues — in a run that begins previews Nov. 4 ahead of a Nov. 18 opening.
