Martha Clarke's new production of the Brecht-Weill musical also stars Michael Park, Mary Beth Peil
F. Murray Abraham and outgoing “Cinderella” star Laura Osnes are among the lead thesps in Martha Clarke’s new Off Broadway production of “The Threepenny Opera,” skedded for an April opening at the Atlantic Theater Company.
Osnes, who will soon end her stint as the titular princess in “Cinderella” to make way for Carly Rae Jepsen, will play the young Polly Peachum, who falls for antihero Macheath in the 1928 musical by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. Abraham, the Oscar winner who appears on “Homeland,” is on board as Polly’s protective father, while stage vet and “As the World Turns” Emmy winner Michael Park takes on Macheath. Mary Beth Peil has booked the role of Polly’s mother.
Rick Holmes (“Peter and the Starcatcher”), Lilli Cooper and “August: Osage County” alum Sally Murphy (appearing in “Threepenny” as the prostitute Jenny) also are among the 14-thesp cast. “Threepenny” will be the second New York outing this season for director-choreographer Clarke, who in the fall staged new work “Cheri” at Off Broadway’s Signature Theater.
The eight-week run of “Threepenny” starts previews March 12 ahead of an April 7 opening at the Atlantic’s mainstage space in downtown Gotham.
