Drama Desk Awards Set 2014 Dates

Drama Desk Awards

With the Hollywood awards season building to an Oscar frenzy, the legit world’s 2014 kudo season continues to come into focus as the Drama Desk sets dates for its annual round of awards.

Nominations are due to be announced April 25 ahead of an awards ceremony skedded to take place at midtown venue Town Hall June 1. As is often the case, that timeline puts the Drama Desks just ahead of the Tony Awards, which will name noms April 29 prior to the June 8 kudocast.

Unlike the Tonys, which hand out trophies only to Broadway productions, the Drama Desks consider titles from Broadway, Off Broadway and Off Off Broadway, all competing in the same categories. Nominees are selected by a small committee made up of critics, academics and legit industry pros; the winners are voted on by the Desk’s membership of critics, journos, editors and publishers who cover theater.

Just as the Academy Awards have sparked a  proliferation of film honors around the same time, the Tonys rep the finish line of an increasingly crowded theater awards season that also includes the Outer Critics, the New York Drama Critics Circle, the Lucille Lortels, the Drama League and the Obies, among others.

Scribe Bill Rosenfield will write the Drama Desk ceremony, to be directed by Transport Group a.d. Jack Cummings III. Joey Parnes Prods. (“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder”) produces and manages the event, presented by TheaterMania and exec produced by Gretchen Shugart.
