Carol Burnett, Brian Dennehy, Mia Farrow to Read ‘Love Letters’ on Broadway

Mia Farrow, Brian Dennehy and Carol Burnett are among the actors lined up to star in the revolving-door cast of “Love Letters,” the incoming Broadway revival of A.R. Gurney’s 1988 play.

Alan Alda, Candice Bergen, Stacy Keach, Diana Rigg, Anjelica Huston and Martin Sheen also are on board for stints in the show, to be helmed by Gregory Mosher (“A View from the Bridge”). The production opens in the fall at the Nederlander Theater, the venue where “Newsies” will close Aug. 24.

The script of “Love Letters,” the epistolary tale of the lifelong correspondence between a man and a woman who may or may not be the love of each others’ life, offers the framework for an unusually cost-effective Broadway production. The show is often presented as a semi-staged reading in which actors have the text of the letters they read in front of them. With little preparation needed for the two-actor cast, big-name actors can rotate in and out of the show with relatively brief scheduling commitments.

Most of the actors appearing in the new production of “Love Letters” will star in the show for about a month, although Dennehy, who launches the production with Mia Farrow, will stick around for a second month to topline alongside Burnett.

Nelle Nugent (“The Trip to Bountiful”) produces the title with Bond franchise producer Barbara Broccoli, Frederick Zollo, Olympus Theatricals, Kenneth Teaton and Colleen Camp.

Toplined by Dennehy and Farrow, “Love Letters” starts perfs Sept. 13 ahead of a Sept. 18 opening at the Nederlander.
