‘Best Little Whorehouse in Texas’ Heads Back to Broadway

The 1978 musical “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” will get its first Broadway revival next year in a new staging directed and choreographed by Rob Ashford (pictured above).

Few details have been set for the upcoming production, other than a timeline that would see the show open sometime in 2015.

Stage vet Ashford, whose directing credits including “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” starring Daniel Radcliffe and a London staging of “A Streetcar Named Desire” that featured Rachel Weisz, most recently directed the Gotham run of “Macbeth” starring Kenneth Branagh. A Tony winner for “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and Emmy winner for his musical staging at the 81st Academy Awards, Ashford will collaborate with Branagh again for his upcoming film version of “Cinderella.”

“Best Little Whorehouse,” by Larry L. King, Peter Masterson and Carol Hall, centers on a venerable Texas bordello, the Chicken Ranch, and the campaign by a TV reporter to get the place shut down. The title premiered Off Broadway in 1978 and soon moved to Broadway, where it ran for four years.

Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel (“August: Osage County,” “Spring Awakening,” “The Bridges of Madison County”) produce the new revival. Former press agent Richards represented the musical during its original Broadway run.
