Benedict Cumberbatch will swap Sherlock for Shakespeare when he takes the stage as the titular tragic hero in the London Barbican Theatre production of “Hamlet.”

The 37-year-old British actor has been confirmed to star in the production, helmed by Lyndsey Turner and produced by Sonia Friedman. The show will run from August to October 2015.

The role will mark Cumberbatch’s return to the stage after playing the lead alongside Jonny Lee Miller in Danny Boyle’s 2011 National Theatre production of “Frankenstein.”

The “12 Years a Slave” actor joins other thesps who have recently taken on the role of Hamlet, including David Tennant, Patrick Stewart, Michael Sheen, Jude Law, John Simm and Rory Kinnear.

Booking details for the highly anticipated production’s 12-week run are expected to be released in May.
