Richard Carlton, TV Exec Who Oversaw the International Emmys, Dies at 95

Richard Carlton, a former executive at Trans Lux Television who brought such cartoon hits as “Felix the Cat” and “Speed Racer” to American audiences and later oversaw the International Emmy Awards, died of natural causes at home in White Plains, N.Y., on May 10. He was 95.

During a long career in film and television, Carlton served as executive vice president of Trans Lux Television; as deputy director of the American Film Institute (1973-80); and, finally, as executive director of the International Council of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, where he led the production of the International Emmy Awards from 1983-3.

Born in Manhattan, Carlton graduated from high school at age 16. His first job was at Columbia Pictures, after which he served honorably in World War II.

Carlton is survived by his wife, Blossom; two daughters and two sons; and eight grandchildren.
