Zurich Film Festival to Focus on New Indian Cinema in Sidebar

LONDON — The Zurich Film Festival has selected India as the focus for its New World View section.

The selection will look at the latest developments in auteur filmmaking in India, with a focus on young, emerging filmmakers working in the independent sector with pics that “approach new themes with fresh narrative styles.” It will not include Bollywood movies.

The program will showcase 10 feature and documentary films, and a short film block. Details of the program will be released at a later date.

Citing examples of the type of films it will select, the fest listed Vasan Balas’ debut “Peddlers,” a relationship drama in the form of a thriller, Ritesh Batra’s romantic comedy “The Lunchbox,” and the gangster family saga Anurag Kashyap’s “Gangs of Wasseypur.”

The fest’s co-directors Nadja Schildknecht and Karl Spoerri said in a statement, “New Indian cinema has experienced an upsurge in recent years. New projects have been realized over the past few years that undermine common stereotypes. The movement from mainstream to independent cinema is unmistakable. This development is incredibly exciting.”

Festival runs Sept. 25-Oct. 5.
